Downer endings

Garfield Ridge is running through a list of downer film endings.

"Fail Safe" and "Presumed Innocent" are at the top of my list, but they've already been mentioned. Here are a few others:

"Do the Right Thing"

"Arlington Road"

"Easy Rider"

"Terminator 3"

Another comment, mentioning a Twilight Zone episode where aliens destroy mankind because people aren't warlike enough, reminded me of one of my favorite TZ episodes with a similar story.

Aliens visit Earth and begin bestowing great technology that brings about an unprecedented age of peace. There are forcefields that can guard whole cities from nuclear attack, and the aliens ensure huge harvests that end hunger.

The aliens give people a copy of a book, but it is written in their language. Though no-one fully understands the language, analysts are able to decipher the title: "To Serve Man".

Meanwhile, the aliens start taking loads of people to visit their home planet, promising they will see a paradise.

The show ends with the main character getting on one of the flying saucers to go visit the alien homeworld. Suddenly one of his colleagues runs up and yells, "Don't go! Don't go! They translated the book! To Serve Man! It's a cookbook!!!"
