Some commenters, okay one commenter has suggested that reports of "Star Trek" redshirt deaths are greatly exaggerated.
Sadly, this sort of misguided thinking is spreading throughout society like a malignant fungus.
For the edimification of these hapless folk, I would like to point out that redshirt tragedies are common to the point of having spawned their own slang.
