Disturbing

I'd recently cottoned on to the blog of Steven Vincent, a freelance American journalist in Iraq who had pieces published in The Christian Science Monitor, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

His latest essay, "The Naive American", was quite good. It was about a newly arrived American officer who was well-stocked with common sense and good intentions, but a bit short on experience in the realities of Iraq.

A constant presence in his writing was his Iraqi translator, a young woman of fiery democratic ideals. Ironically, in "The Naive American", she was a counterpoint to the officer's wariness towards "imposing" democracy and liberty on Iraq.

Hours after reading this piece, I saw the tragic news that Vincent has been found dead with bullet wounds in his chest. His translator is in critical condition. They had been abducted on Tuesday, shot, and dumped nearby.

Take a moment to read some of his work.
