Cool Globe
Here is a cool 3D globe showing economic activity. This would be a great concept to apply to Google Earth. Mash it up with the CIA Factbook or Zillow or some other online repository of lots of awesome data.
It would also be a cool thing to work into strategy video games. Instead of having to peer at sheets of statistics concerning your cities, civilizations, or troops, show it with 3D visuals. Want to know which city is producing the most, or consuming the most resources? Done. Want to see troop levels? Done.
